What is a Sit n Go Poker Tournament?
Why Sit n Go?
We're busy people. You probably are too. Sit and Go poker tournaments were created just for people like us. Sometimes, it's just impractical to wait for a poker tournament to start. So why wait? Most on-line poker rooms have Sit and Go (or SNG, sng, SitNGo) tournaments available at just about any buy-in amount you'd like. Some as little as $0.10 (depending on the site)!
C'mon Tell Us What It Is!
Ready? A Sit n Go poker tournament is one that starts immediately upon all the seats at the table(s) being filled. Many Sit n Gos are single table tournaments (STTs), with only nine to ten players; but can have as little as two. Want more action? Try a multi-table tournament (MTT); with 2 or more tables of nine to ten players. Your site probably offers these larger versions too. But if your time is limited, you may want to stick with an STT. In our experience most STTs take about an hour and a half from start to finish, assuming you make it that far.
Can I Play My Favorite Game?
Very likely. Although most of the games you'll see will either be Texas Hold 'Em or Omaha, if you look you may find others like Razz or Seven Card Stud.
What Does "Turbo" Mean?
Excellent question. In most poker games, though not all, there are "blinds" (two forced bets before the cards are dealt). As the game progresses, the blinds grow larger. In a "Turbo" tournament the time between these increases may be shorter. Or, the structure of these blinds may be different and they might skip a level that you're used to seeing. If your time is short, you may want to try one. But be warned, you may not always have time to wait for the hand you want to play. With the blinds escalating at a faster rate, you may be forced to play hands you wouldn't normally just to see if you can pick up some chips to stay in the game.
Why Don't I Just Sit Down At A Cash Table (Ring Game)?
That... is up to you. While you could take your buy-in and just sit down at a cash game, what you come to the table with is what you have to play with. If you sit down at a $0.01/$0.02 cash table with $1.00, all you get is a dollars worth of chips. While others at your table may have more. If you drop into a Sit n Go, you'll start with the same amount of chips as everyone else--a level playing field. Plus, depending on the payout structure, you might win as much as 50% of the total pot; which usually amounts to four times your buy-in (for a nine player STT). If you think you can quadruple your money at a cash game in an hour and a half with people coming and going and bringing whatever money they want to plunk down (even though there is a maximum limit), without having to put more money in yourself, go for it.
Can I Win?
Of course! There are strategies to winning or placing in the money in Sit n Gos that you can follow to help you become a consistent winner. If you finish in the money, you'll always win at least a little more than what you paid to get in to the tournament. Look through our Sit n Go Blog for more information, tips and strategies.
